A mother trying on her mask, to protect her against air pollution, holds her child. It is a recognisable and familiar scene that is disrupted by the unusual glowing mask, and therefore a new visual story for polluting climate impacts from traffic and city congestion.
WHAT IT SHOWS: Liliana Cichy amuses her daughters with an LED light mask from the Unmask My City air pollution campaign in her family’s apartment in Warsaw, Poland. The mask changes colour dynamically according to real time measurements of local air pollution levels, and according to Air Quality Index standards for PM2.5 particulates. Breathing problems are an everyday reality for the young family, so the family has an air purifier in their home. Here the mask is green, indicating good air quality levels and negating any need to wear a protective mask. However, the reality for Warsaw is some of the worst air pollution levels in Europe.
